Cambridge to the Somme

I don’t much like Austin Cambridges. Too staid for my liking. I like this card though. I like the fact that this family have loaded up their modest family saloon, affixed a metal GB badge and crossed the Channel to explore the Continent.

Or is something else going on here? Is that a shroud on the roof rack? Surely not. But what? They’re heading north so presumably on their way back to Calais. Did they have anything to declare?

This is Amiens and that’s le Tour Perret in the background, an early Modernist skyscraper of twenty-seven floors which was completed in 1954, the year that A40 or A50 Cambridge was launched.  I’m not sure anyone would hold the Austin up as an example of modern car design though.
