I came across this old photograph while rummaging around in a junk shop looking for postcards of cars. It has a couple of cars in it, but what intrigues me is what the people are doing. Is that a policeman, or ‘gendarme’ I should say, holding his truncheon over his head? I can only guess he’s directing traffic, but why is the well dressed woman standing right in front of him? What can she be saying? Why was the photograph taken and by whom? And how did it find its way into a junk shop in Shropshire?
