Mystery Car at the Solarium

The building is still there in 2015 now serving as a cafe/restaurant but back in the 1930s it was Britain’s first solarium using ultraviolet light to provide year-round sunbathing on indoor sand. I have no idea what that white car is in the top postcard but it looks extremely grand. However, the second postcard, showing the building from the other side, shows a scene from the 1960s with a variety of British cars – Rover 2000, Vauxhall estate, Vauxhall Cresta, Mini, Sunbeam Alpine, Triumph Herald and lots more.

  1. Not all British – there’s an Opel Rekord estate front & centre. The guy in the tight trousers seems less interested in it than he is in the cute girl in the swimming costume.
Nice Ford Consul MkII on the left.

  2. Well spotted! I don’t know how I didn’t see that. I think I must have thought it was some obscure Vauxhall model.

  3. The white Triumph on the left must be Herald’s 6-cylinder brother Vitesse, which proudly featured the duotone colour scheme. Some extra staring will make the different Vitesse front wings and aluminium-coloured bumpers visible, too.
