A square that’s not a square and a Cortina that’s something else!

Lotus Cortina Mk 1

I thought this was a pub carpark but on the back of the postcard it says it’s the Square in Hawkshead in the Lake District between Conniston Water and Windermere, just above Esthwaite Water. But of course it isn’t for the quaint architecture that we’re looking at this scene, nor for the leaning lady. No, we’re gazing at that Mark 1 Lotus Cortina. No badge engineering here! This car was put together at the Lotus factory by fitting a Cosworth developed 1600 cc twin cam engine and the Lotus Elan gearbox into a body shell supplied by Ford. Special lightweight bonnet, boot and doors were fitted, the suspension completely redesigned and the brakes uprated and a green flash painted on the sides and across the back. Oh yes and a few little Lotus badges were added. Would be worth a lot of money now if it’s survived.
